Governing Atkinson

Atkinson’s Board  of Directors is made up of no fewer than seven and no greater than 11 directors.

Individually, Directors are committed to Atkinson’s mission, principles and values, and to our ongoing effort to be an anti-racist organization. They are eligible to serve three consecutive terms of three years.

Collectively, Directors provide strategic direction, fiduciary oversight, and generative leadership in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and her team.Their consensus model of decision-making prioritizes thoughtful dialogue and deliberation.  Atkinson’s Board and staff partnership is supported by volunteer groups and advisors on an ad hoc basis .

The Board takes seriously the symbiotic relationship between policy and practice. Good policy enables fairness, accountability and transparency while good practice depends on respect for uniqueness, adaptability, and discretion. Three policy frameworks — funding, investment and impact —  anchor our 10-year organizational strategy.

The Board monitors Atkinson’s performance through quarterly and annual meetings and reports as well as regulatory filings. They appraise their own and the Chief Executive Officer’s performance annually. The work of the Board is carried out by four standing committees:

Audit and Budget Committee
Annette Aquin, Chair
Wendy Chan
Danyaal Raza

Investment Committee
Erik Mathiesen, Chair
Annette Aquin
Wendy Chan
Brian Minns
Ana Serrano
Mark Sevestre
Nina Yoo

Nominations and Governance Committee
Pam Sugiman, Chair

The Grants Committee is a Committee of the Whole, meaning the entire Board participates in the work of this committee. Atkinson’s Chief Executive Officer, Colette Murphy, is an ex-officio member of these four standing committees.
