In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis, governments are planning billions of dollars in public infrastructure investments to stimulate the economy. With community benefits agreements, these investments can build world class infrastructure, create good jobs, and build just and sustainable communities.

To respond to this opportunity, the Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN) is launching a monthly webinar series on organizing for community wealth building projects, including community benefits agreements.

It kicks off on September 9th at 6:00pm, with Building an Inclusive, Anti-Racist Society in which panelists will discuss how we can all combat racism in the workplace and how communities are mobilizing for systems change. The webinar will be moderated by TCBN Executive Director Rosemarie Powell, include a welcome from Atkinson’s Director of Advocacy and Organizing, Ausma Malik, and have a panel with:

  • Zahra Dhanani – Community Solidarity Against Racism in Construction
  • Kimoy Francique – Member, IBEW Union Local 353
  • Mohamed Hashim – Executive Director, Canadian Race Relations Foundation
  • Melana Roberts – Policy staff, Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unit at City of Toronto

Forthcoming webinars in the series are:

  • October 14: Exploring Global Best Practices and Lessons Learned
  • November 10: The Union Movement – Building the Future
  • December 9: Working with Employers, Contractors, and Subcontractors
  • January 13: Setting Minimum Targets and Other Mechanisms to Ensure Compliance
  • February 14: Working with Municipalities, Universities, Hospitals, and Government
