In this op-ed in the Toronto Star, Carolyn Ferns (Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care) and Alana Powell (Association of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario) share their concerns about the rapid re-opening of child care centres in Ontario and make the case for building a better child care system now.
They argue we can’t rush the re-opening of centres and we need to take the lead from early childhood educators, as they outlined in this report, From Reopening to Recovery: A plan for child care reopening in Ontario and moving to a publicly funded system.
The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed the cracks in child care systems across Canada, and now is the time to build a better child care system. To do this, they also make the case for federal leadership in child care.
